3D Printing an Anatomical Cross-Section Sculpture!

Check out Wondrium and start a free trial today at www.wondrium.com/tested

We experiment with a 3D printing technique to make it look like a solid object is embedded in a glossy piece of translucent resin, in this case a golden skull encased in a bust of the Venus de Milo. It's a convincing effect that can be replicated using free modeling software and looks great 3D printed in resin like SirayaTech Simple Clear, painted with some Rub 'n Buff. Follow along and try this project out yourself!

I was thinking instead of using rubnbuff, I'd likt to try this using metallic paints, acrylic or modeling and sloshing it throughout the cut out. Might make the jaw bone section easier to get into.

Nice Work! Two thoughts: 1) The opening had me waiting to hear "Hey guys, it's Friday, which means it's time for..." but alas it never came 2) The two halves look slightly misaligned when put together. I wonder if it would have been possible to have some registration/keying between halves, say a ridge of the skull from the marble half.

I guess this technique as opposed to printing the skull, and embedding it to a casted clear resin is relatively easier and cheaper to make if you have this kind of printer. Although I can see that the effect would pretty much be the same. Over all a great project! Hope to see you build a full body model and see how that turns out.

I actually like the hybrid copper/gold. Looks more like an aged, mottled construction you would find in da Vinci's workspace or something. Would love to see that intentionally applied on the whole interior. P.S. Norm seems like he smiles and presents more warmly now, and it comes through in the final product.

Having an object embedded inside of clear doesn't work very well if the clear is a complex shape, because there is too much distortion. Better to have the embedded object inside of something with perfectly flat sides like a cube.

The material is an ultra-violet curing resin. A UV light array directed through a mono-filter screen flashes small layer slices of a given 3d model onto the bottom layer of a vat of this liquid resin, curing the layer. The build plate then lifts up, pulling the cured layer off of a FEP sheet, then settling back down a single layer higher before the screen then flashes the next slice. x1000 Remove the finished model, separate the support structure and clean with isopropyl before fully curing with more UV exposure. It's a bit of a messy process, but the results can be quite stunning.

Nice work. I’d love to see the Onyx Venus with a red LED shining through it with some of the eye carved through the rub and buff. Also an air brush would probably work great for the negative space painting. Also a cracked paint with white light through the clear resin showing through the cracks would be sweet. Especially if you chose a more dramatic sculpture than Venus.

That ruby rub n buff is phenomenal looking. I think it stands out more against the onyx half. Could you possibly replicate the stone look into the hair of the clear resin side as well. Perhaps that's too visually complex but the clear resin distorts the effect quite a bit. I would think as long of the skeletal face is obvious, it would be intriguing.

Great video. By the way, I also created the first Booknook with 3D printing, which was the cover of Reddit two years ago and which generated the fashion that you have reviewed on this channel. I think another interesting use of the bouillon function would be to embed the skeleton inside a transparent figure without slicing it and having a hole in the bottom of the figure and then pouring a relatively liquid paint inside. You might need to modify the skeleton a tiny bit to improve the coverage/flow of paint but would be worth tinkering with it
