3D Printing Hagglethorn Hollow Tabletop Miniatures!

Hagglethorn Hollow Kickstarter Campaign: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
Adam's previous interview with Johnny Fraser-Allen: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebQU7...

For this week's 3D printing showcase, we test print some of the beautiful tabletop terrain pieces from Weta Workshop sculptor Johnny Fraser-Allen's Hagglethorn Hollow! These miniature buildings are directly sourced from Johnny's gorgeous sculpts, scanned and optimized for filament printing. We print both FDM and resin samples from this modular set, and talk about how to print directly on the build plate and avoid artifacts like the dreaded elephant's foot. Check out Hagglethorn Hollow in the last few days of its campaign!

Keep those coming. We like 3D printing stuff. Your picky attitude towards quality makes your 3D printing reviews very informative.

I agree with wishing they catered more to resin printers. Most of these files are useless to me with just having an elegoo mars which sucks cause if they were cut and prepped for the mars I'd definitely use the resin for it all.

I remember a fee years ago when I saw this first I was amazed by the paintjob. Now, after I spend my time exclusively printing and painting obsessively, that paintjob does not impress me anymore at all lol.

Norm, great video and nice to see Lychee Slicer and Atlas mentioned in a Tested 3d printing video! Particularly with all the chitubox controversy recently, but regardless of that they're two companies really pushing the tech and its accessibility forward :)

Johnny Fraser-Allen is incredibly talented and passionate about this project and I'm glad it's finally coming to full fruition! Came out great from what they show here

Honestly curious why it’s a Kickstarter project when it’s clearly already finished. If it’ll be delivered in “July 2021” then why not just sell the STL files?

    • Nate

      پیش 16 روز

The original pieces drop first. The ruins and stretch goals drop later. It's not all releasing July 2021.

My guess would be that a kick-starter is a great way for small companies/individuals to cut on costs that otherwise would eat into your profit. Doing a kick-starter gives you more exposure than just selling in myminifactory or any e-store. You can also get a feel on the demand for your product, what your customers will like to see or what they already like. These are all saved costs on research, consumer habits, marketing and audience engagement. What you learn from a successful/failed kick-starter helps tremendously towards your next projects. I'm sure after the kick-starter they may have late pledges or dump the STLs into an e-store anyway but the data collected from doing one seems to me like a very valuable investment.

@The Gnomish Arcanum I bought the Elegoo Mars 2 for doing miniatures and custom parts for the models I'm building from Eaglemoss, Agora, Fanhome.

@Allen Grant Welcome to the community ! You're going to fail (possibly a lot of of) prints and wonder why. No worries, it's part of the process of learning and dialing in your printer. Don't be afraid to ask for help and diagnostics online. Remember, every model you print is a different challenge. The more you print, the better you'll get at it. Keep a journal, that will help. Oh, and last advice, don't be too quick to modify/buy new hardware to get better prints : throwing money at it is not always the solution. Often, it's what is peripheral that counts (have a dry filament, use an enclosure, avoid vibrations of the printing platform). Printers have limitations (hobby level ones are often dialed to print PLA because it's the easiest to print, and the bigger the printer, the more its head is prone to vibrate if you print something big). It's no secret that to print more demanding filaments, it's going to get more complex and cost more and then you'll want to upgrade your printer close to the level of professional platforms.

The most basic and easiest to learn : the free web-based TinkerCAD. Once you feel confortable with it and want to go beyond, the next step is Blender (huge community, lots of tutorials).

For fitment, both surfaces should have a hemispherical divet in various places that accepts a spherical bead, like you might use in sand casting. Then the models can be rotated as desired and finally locked-in place as required, ie balls only, glue, gum, etc.
