Adam Savage and Fon Davis Talk About Working on Star Wars!

Adam sits down with his friend and former colleague Fon Davis of Fonco to reminisce about working on special effects for the Star Wars prequels, with all its moments of triumph, tedium and terror. Adam also presents a classic example of ILM modelmaking: a T11 Skyhopper maquette he made ... that (spoiler alert!) George Lucas unfortunately didn't like.

'Jealousy' and 'Hate' are unpleasant emotions. We all know that. But I can safely apply them to how I feel listening to these two icons and their extraordinary experiences. Truly amazing. Lovely to watch. And as everyone else has said: "More! More! More!" (please - and with sprinkles on top)

geeks, geeking out. so much fun. For me it was removable disk drives platters so large that when you wrapped your arms around them your fingers wouldn't meet. these platter stacks (10? platters) would go into a washing machine sized cabinet attached to the mainframe by a flat ribbon cable wider than your spread fingers. At DECUS Wizard sessions stories were told of configurations still running after earthquakes had separated the raised floor. A different kind of geeking out. so much fun.

Growing up I thought something like ILM was the ultimate goal for me in life. Growing up east coast it was tough to view what I needed to do. I got into photography and got a BFA in graphic design. I helped pioneer the CGI lab at my college. I worked for a game company that had contracts with Lucasfilm, Paramount, New Line; I went to the Skywalker ranch. The day came when I lead from a west coast studio offered me a job on the spot to work on Star Trek Voyager, and I turned it down. I had a new house and new baby; another guy they did take was out of work again in six months. I guess I'll always wonder about the career I turned my back on, or perhaps I dodged a bullet.

I don't know, by showing this T-11, someone somewhere might just contact you so that it can become a canon thing. If nothing else, chuck it over to EC Henry and he'll give it some extra lore, and he'll chuck it over to a buddy and make a nice computer rendering with all the colors and blinking lights and whatnot, maybe even have it screaming down some canyons on Tatooine.

I can't stand condescending comments about a dream job like that being 90% tedium and boredom. You still get to do what you want, and that makes things FAR more personally rewarding. You want to know tedium and boredom? Slog it out every day for years on an assembly line. Throw in doing it over night, and watch how soul crushingly depressing it is. And for minimum wage? No one is doing that as a dream job. Every job has the potential of being miserable at times, but doing what you like is key to not wanting to, ya know...

The interesting thing for model makers like me that work on kits that aren't studio scale sized is trying to replicate greeblie detail that looks "right" when there isn't anything quite right in size or shape. For instance, when adding details to the 1999 Eagle for Series 2, Brian Johnson's guys added stuff to the models. I tried to emulate those added bits on a half scale MPC Round 2 kit which had the Series 1 details. The original bits appeared to be from 1/35 Tamiya armor and 1/72 (probably Airfix) aircraft kits. So for my added details I used 1/72 to 76 armor bits and 1/144 airplane bits to replicate what my research showed. Fun stuff.
