Ask Adam Savage: "How I Broke My Neck"

Tested member Rich L asked, "When you told the story about the sign you 'retrieved' from the closed gymnasium, you mentioned falling off the water tower and breaking your neck. Did we hear that correctly? The story please!" Here's the story, Rich; thank you for the question and your support. AAARRRGGHHH, this is my greatest fear. paraplegia, or worse I dived into a river on a school picnic while chasing another who was waist-deep, on a sandy beachhead. I went to cut him off 'at the pass' and dove from the upstream bank, SMACK BANG into the rocks hidden just below the surface. My head missed them by centremetres but I removed most of the skin from my chest and belly. Thank Gaia I used a racing dive and not a flourishing one. I'd be dead o'wise.

That's what a great uncle of mine did in WWII -- dove head-first into shallow water off the side of a boat, in this case. He survived, against all odds. But yeah, that "residual damage" -- he spent the rest of his life paralyzed down one side of his body. He lived to 98.

That statistic about young men being the most accident prone always seems weird, and then I remember my brother literally fired a flare gun point-blank into his own palm. And got a scrap of flaming duct tape stuck to his wrist. And sliced open his calf with hedge trimmers. And had to have a lego brick endoscopically removed from his throat. And - okay you get the point.

Interesting to think, if adam had divided at a slightly different angle, the entire world would be different. All the episodes of mythbusters, gonr. All the millions of hours spent watching it, spent doing something else. Millions of lives changed in all sort of tiny and large ways. People walking in front of cars when they'd otherwise be watching mythbusters or tested in this universe, people having sex and bringing people into the world, who dont exist in this universe... Everything changed because of the angle some californian kid divided at.

I worked with a guy who had all 4 upper front teeth missing. He'd dived into a small natural pool without being able to see the bottom and smashed his teeth out on the bottom. And he could never afford to get any sort of fix. I'll tell his story and Adam's to my son when he starts swimming so he knows to never dive without first exploring the area he's diving into. He'll ignore me, but at least I can say I told you so if things go wrong. Parenting 101.

When I broke my neck (last October), the only reason I even went to the ER is because my nose was REALLY broken, like "open fracture" broken. I had tripped going UP the concrete steps to my house and done a "look, Ma, no hands" Cirque du Soleil flying faceplant onto concrete. Upon getting to the ER (in a friend's truck, with a grotty kitchen side-towel on my face because it was pouring blood), while doing triage/intake, my arms started burning, and I mentioned that and sh** got serious, fast. And apparently, I had not only broken my nose, but my sinus and my eye sockets and C4-6. So I got emergency surgery, where they Dremel'd and Erector Set'd my neck back together, and tidied up a bunch of arthritis, a destroyed disc, and a bunch of bone spurs while they were in there. Luckily, the only real lasting effects (so far, they'll probaby improve with time) are a little loss of dexterity in my right hand and some wobbly instability, walking. SUPER LUCKY.

PSA! Always do depth checks when diving into lakes and rivers! It helps to bring along someone who is a good swimmer, and not scared of diving 10 feet down into a lake. The moral of the story isn't to not have fun, its to have fun safely. Depth check the entire area you're going to be jumping in so you know you're safe.

Having someone ride with you in the ambulance, hrm. When I fell and shattered my humerus from the elbow, after the ordeal of being picked up and loaded onto the ambulance I thought I would get the opportunity to blank out a little, especially with two paramedics present. Turned out that this was their first time using that type of ambulance electronics, so for instance when they meant to take an EKG, they instead turned on a fan blowing cold air onto me. So they rigged my broken arm up with a cord, pulled it through a big ring and told me to hold onto it with my good arm. Which I did for about 20 minutes while they figured things out. It was a bit rough.

I knew a family that had bought a school bus and used it kind of like a camper. This particular family had 3 pretty daughters that were right around my age. Well one time I was in the bus and they had a bed in the back and we were talking and what not and I thought I someone jumped on the bed, not as an invitation of any kind just playing around so I thought I would be really cool and jump high and flop on the bus. Two things that don't work are a decent vertical and a metal roof. I know exactly what he means about thinking that your head must have a dent in it. Same group of girls I flipped a bike over and landed on my head on asphalt by using the front brakes too much and being too far forward. Makes me wonder if I would have understood graduate quantum mechanics if I hadn't done all these things, probably not.

90% sounds about right. You dove into a rock. I took a sled down a ski hill that had frozen into essentially ice and hit a mogul at the bottom. The rest of the guys I was with were at the bottom and told me I flew circa 8-10 feet vertically and 60-75 feet horizontally before landing facing the opposite direction on my head. Nothing like waking up and hearing a bunch of panicked voices saying stuff like, "oh my God there's blood coming out of his ears, Is he Dead?", and other variations on that theme. I'm pretty sure the nurses at the hospital thought I was on drugs because they got all the information wrong, had it that I flew 8-10 feet horizontally. I was completely out of it and could barely walk as I was seeing triple and quadruple of most things for over an hour after the accident. The hospital took a Cat Scan gave me a tetanus, on the opposite side I had landed on so sleeping was a PITA and sent me home with a bunch of college age guys and told them not to let me go to sleep. This happened during the week so they took me to my dorm room and said "goodnight". Probably figured that if I had been seriously hurt the hospital would have kept me. I spent the next week not being able to move above a slow walk without getting nauseous and with the worse headache you can imagine, rivals the one you get at the end of Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. When I was younger circa 10 I was drug by a horse into a fence post as well. I hit the post with my throat. Not sure how it didn't break my neck as I was being dragged towards the post and my body was at an acute angle to the post so my neck had to bend close to the point where the back of my head would be on my back or in excess of 90 degrees. I know I was literally seeing stars afterwards. After that the horse was rearing up and highly agitated, I had tied the rope around my waist and put a slip knot around the horse so that I could change the halter that he was wearing (the horse was circa 4 months old and our stallion started chasing him which is where everything went south for me). We had started building a log barn in the pasture and I knew the horse was going to run across those logs. There were small branches and knots and I knew I was going to die if he drug me across that area. I absolutely knew that's where he was going and I was going to die. Then he stopped rearing up the slip knot loosened floated over his ears across the distance between us and landed around my shoulders. When the rope landed that foal ran exactly where I had known he would. I know there's a God and that guardian angels exist as I saw the proof with my own eyes. A little off topic but I thought I would share as maybe this will help to encourage someone who is having a moment of doubt. I believe that there is more than one way to the promise land and that to call yourself a Christian you need to follow the teachings of Christ not just show up at a building a few times a week.

Man, that gives me flashbacks to when my much older brother dove headfirst into the shallow end of a pool, and ended up causing so much damage to his brain and spine that he never recovered. He lost his job as a teacher because he could no longer concentrate properly or do his job effectively, and he eventually succumbed years later to related complications. Diving into the water is such a gamble, especially when you can't see below the surface. Never dive into water unless you're sure you can do it safely!

We had a swimming hole in the backwoods of their house and I kid you not, a freaking Alligator was chilling out back after a while. My brothers jumped off this tall, tall sycamore tree right as this monstrous beast slid into the water. Thankfully, it didn't bite us or anything. But we booked it after I showed my brothers the slide in spot. The trail was almost 4 feet across and started deep underneath the bushes and roots that edged that swimming hole. My grandparents didn't believe us until we hauled them back and stayed overnight in a tree blind. When you shine a light out the tops of an alligator eyes glow red. Suffice to say, we didn't swim much in the great outdoors that Summer.

I had to preform a PFT and everything went wrong, eyes not adjusting to light properly and tingling in extremities. Headache that could knock out a mule. Went to the Med Bay and they immediately immobilized my head in a Halo system. I was then taken to Walter Reed Hospital Where I was shaved for a cranial pressure relief. I was told if I loose consciousness again, they are going to "drill baby drill" to remove a small section of my skull to let the excess brain blood out. Fortunately I did not have to get drilled. But my neck is still trash. and Im pretty sure I dropped a few I.Q. Points. somewhere along the way. I'm walking and talking so I can not complain.

I worked with a professor at Oral Roberts University named Even Culp who had done almost exactly the same thing but was not nearly as lucky. He could walk, but only with great difficulty and had no balance through his inner ear - he always had to keep his eyes on the surface he was walking on to stay upright. A brilliant guy who became a good friend - this was in the early 1980s and he's still there :)

America confuses me. You have hospitals ran by churches. The standard of medical care is determined by your bank balance and family connections...........its just wrong.

One of my brother's high school buddies became a quadriplegic from a diving accident in his early 20's. Glad you had better luck, Adam.

When I was a kid me and my sister were jumping on the bed and I did a back flip, landed on my head, and heard a crackle pop in my neck. I think I was 3 or 4. Never got it checked out. Funnily enough, I did the same thing years later when I was 12 or 13 where I did a back flip from the edge of an in-ground swimming pool. All of the flips were successful except the one where I said "Hey, watch this" and I subsequently landed headfirst on the concrete edge of the pool. Unfortunately for me, I DID have a wonderful dent in my head. I'm about a quarter Irish so I guess I hit the one soft spot. I didn't black out. I promptly popped out of the water and felt the dent and was like... dad's gonna be mad at me. The doctor gave me a choice of shaving my head for stitches or not shaving and getting staples. I chose staples and for a few weeks my classmates oohed and awed and thought I had stapled myself. I still have the scar which leaves quite the Dennis the Menace cowlick on the back of my head.

I saw the title and went Holy F***, is Adam alright?!? Then I watched the video and winced and grimaced and recoiled in empathetic horror at how awful that sounded... and then I laughed my way through the aftermath bit. Thanks for the story Adam, glad to have you around.

It still gives you a chill doesn't. We can see it in your face. I got a chill on one holiday at a hotel. I was going to dive into the pool and at the last sec I stopped. Thinking hold on this is the first time I am here. So I slowly went down the steps at the shallow end and looked under water at the place where I was going to dive. And found under water pillars as seats. Well I nearly died. Shaking I told everyone who was new like me. And I got the hotel to put up a notice about NOT TO DIVING IN THAT LOCATION. In English Spanish and any other that comes to this hotel O boy you were so lucky.

I can totally empathize with Adam's reaction to how the doctor spoke to him. I took a 28 ft. fall to a flagstone patio when I was in my early twenties, the doctor came in and put my X-rays up on a lightboard device, then after a few minutes turned around and proceeded to tell me I had a humpty-dumpty break and that I'd not be walking by the time I was 40 along with telling me all the other things I wouldn't be able to do anymore. No sugar coating that's for sure.

I actually knew a little girl who ran into a door jam, dislocated a vertebra in her neck, and had to wear a Halo vest. Poor kid was only 5 or 6.

Never have I appreciated my nervousness around swimming and diving more than this moment. Wow! So glad you made it without serious injury. Too many life changing events start with the fateful phrase “Hey! Watch this!”

Interesting to explore timelines... In this one, you inspired many people to become interested in science and many others to be a little more wary of unsourced claims. In another, the guy who got your organs lived to become a new Einstein, invented practical fusion power, and ushered in a Utopia.
