Ask Adam Savage: "Which Star Wars Scenes Bring You Joy?"

In this excerpt from his Star Wars Day live stream, Adam answers questions from Tested members D Quartermane, Vickie Bligh, Charles White and Jason Cutrone about his favorite Star Wars scenes and fighter craft, possible Tusken Raider cosplay, and his theoretical preference were he to work on the current films or TV series. I like the ornateness of the wheel-lock examples in the V&A Museum, but I feel like the wheel lock itself is less understood by modern audiences. If you look at a plain wheel lock, it doesn't look like an antique gun, it looks like some sci-fi device embedded in the side like you're trying to hide a Romulan disruptor while fighting alongside a primitive culture. Audiences are more primed to expect cap-and-ball or later. Almost all of the steampunk aesthetic derives from Hollywood cowboy movie tropes with gears and a brass rivet Bedazzler applied. Wheel lock is a beautiful mechanism and very interesting in action when you realize how it works, but to get a modern audience to understand it, you kind of have to hide the wheel lock itself so people pay attention to the touch cord and flash pan. That said, it's perfect for a base for a Tuskan Raider. We already expect it to fire plasma bolts, so the quasi-futuristic look of the wheel-lock mechanism embedded in an otherwise antique rifle is exactly the right aesthetic. You can also mix the hyper-ornate with the plain and cover it all with weathering and dust to really sell the hodge-podge look and give it a visual story. I do love the attempts to expand steampunk outside of the "American west plus brass" mindset, but while there are amazing examples of steampunk applied to other cultures, the bulk of the aesthetic is still Euro-centric.

I think you've misremembered the series. The chaser lights pretending to be fuel lines was on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. (It is relatively easy to get them confused when you're just thinking about the effects. The fighters were rejected concepts from Battlestar Galactica, they had a lot of the same effects people, two of the establishing shots from the first season were directly taken from the beginning and end of a long establishing shot in one episode of Battlestar Galatica, and Buck Rogers started the season following Galactica.)

Sadly as an old school fan, I must ask. Who CARES anymore?!? Star Wars has been redefined in the worst ways possible. I can still go back and watch the theatrical releases of the old films, play some of the 90s star wars games that came out before the prequels, and enjoy them just to dream that they would bring the essence back to the universe. A Jedi doesn't need to Palm the air and do all that flippy martial Arts crap to use the force! After the Jedi order, the faith In the force became a hokey belief to everyone across the galaxy! A Jedi exercises patience and clairvoyance and allows his physical and spirit to become one with the surrounding entity. We have all the impatient and compulsive "Jedi" who half of the time fling their hand in the air to use their force abilities. Even the lightsaber is now just a "laser sword". Rey is a Palpatine AND a Skywalker?! How the does that even make sense? Star Wars from the special editions through the cruddy prequels and all the cruddy Saturday morning cartoons is just.... Yuck! Even the Mandalorian is messing it up and they had an awesome start! The first season was Amazing! What happened man!?!!

I have to admit, when I think of "British colonial rifles" - which I actually do, more often than one might expect - wheellocks aren't what usually come to mind. Mostly because, as far as I recall, wheelocks as a technology where complicted and unreliable and vanished rapidly as soon as flintlocks were developed. So for me, the phrase "British colonial rifle" brings to mind either the classic "Brown Bess" musket (yes, I know that technically a musket isn't a rifle, but honestly most wheellocks weren't rifles either. Adam is clearly using "rifle" as a synonym for "longarm," and because English is a very flexible language we all know what he means), the primary British longarm during the colonisation of the Americas and Australasia, or the Martini-Henry, which was the primary British longarm during the so-called "Scramble for Africa" and the British *government's* colonisation of India. (Martini-Henrys are used prominently in the movie Zulu, at least in the foreground.) Wheellocks are more of a technical curiousity from before the era of colonialism really got started... which maybe makes them a less complicated thing, emotionally speaking, to build a prop around? A wheellock blaster would certainly be very cool! Also, may I note that I love how Adam's favourite scene as a builder is basically "This is the scene that lets me imagine I'm an IN-CHARACTER builder." :D

Everything about that moment in Rogue One was fantastic, and never have I been so happy in a Star Wars experience as when I saw Red Leader and Gold Leader, the real ones from Episode 4, show up there. My favourite scene covers both what makes me happiest, AND pleases me from an SFX point of view, and that scene is the asteroid chase soon after the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. Visually there is so much going on here with different sized vehicles moving as dynamically as they do in all of Star Wars media, even the latest from today. It’s an SFX tour de force, and it was done completely analogue, which is so impressive. Added to this is the way that Harrison Ford completely stole the show in that film. Han Solo IS the main character in Empire, and the dynamic between him and the rest of the cast was awesome. Solo, combined with the Falcon, combined with that chase scene, combined with how he manages all of the problems right there in the moment, always brings me joy to watch.

Han was just frozen and taken away and we have no idea if he is alive, and Leia, Chewy and Lando are fleeing for their lives. everyone is just down and out. so just seeing Luke back on his feet and confident and a journey to save his friend use to really get me.

Star Wars was the first movie I ever deliberately went to see more than once. My young nephew wanted to see it again and I had enjoyed the movie (a lot), so I took him. That's when I discovered that rewatching a good movie was just like rereading a good book. So what if you knew the end, you can still go along for the ride.

Boba Fett in Mandalorian, getting his armor back and wrecking house made me kinda tear up.

For me, as a fan: -Luke raising his ship in TRoS -the last half hour of Rogue One -When Luke lowers his saber and Vader tells him "Obi-Wan...has taught you well." -The reveal of Yoda in ESB. Every time, I try and forget that Yoda is that silly puppet, and try to expect Yoda to be a Great Warrior. -most scenes with Grogu, but especially when he's with Ahsoka -When DeathWatch shows up to help Mando - "Chewie..we're home" As a modeler/maker/ FX fan: -The Battle of Endor -The last half hour of Rogue One -Seeing SLAVE I rotating from inside the ship on the Mandalorian.

11:10 the design is probably influenced by jezzails, a type of musket that's traditionally used in Afghanistan.

As for what would bea good base for a design would be the Martini-Henry. I think the lever and the iconic loading bit at the top would really fit a tusken raider, or maybe I just enjoy Zulu too much :) .

@Barry Davies here is what you do not know. I am talking about a damn tv show, not the man, not the car. You are the one who is completely ignorant about this video and the information in my comment. The Mandalorian. Look it up. I have not watched it as I will not subscribe to Disney. And they are who produce it and stream it. And they have nothing to do with the damn car that I knew about before the first one ever rolled off the Irish Assembly line. Nor do I state anywhere that Disney had anything to do with the car. Are we clear?

@Jeffrey Smith But I already know Mr Delorean is a man .... And the cars were built in Ireland not Disney

The millennium Falcon is it's own character, an entity that has his own life force: My 2 favorite scenes: 1. Fin & Ray: "What about that ship? "That one's garbage! The garbage will do." Audience erupts 2. Hans Solo and Chewbacca: "Chewy, we're home." Audience erupts

Always fun when Adam talks absolute nonsense about a topic he doesn‘t know much about regarding wheel lock pistols and the basis for the Tusken rifles. It humanises him in my eyes.
