Show and Tell: Adam Savage's 2001: A Space Odyssey Space Suit!

Friend of Tested aerospace enthusiast and engineer Andrew Barth visits Adam in the cave, which gives Adam the chance to show and share his 2001: A Space Odyssey space suit he made for Comic-Con 2015! It's the first "reverse" Show and Tell in which Adam gets to introduce new visitors to the shop something from his collection that they've always wanted to see. Adam and Andrew geek out over the design of the suit and its influences in aerospace history.

It's so strange, thinking about this movie. I've seen it so many times, and have read so much about it, that it's almost like my brain thinks of the events depicted in the movie as a real historical occurrence, like one of the Apollo missions that I am also just barely too young to remember. I guess it's because the movie is just so damned realistic looking. It bowls me over even now that I know as much detail as I can about how they did it.

In the film and on all the movie stills I have seen, the Clavius suit does not have the left arm pushbutton panel nor the tube from the Back Pack to the helmet. It is true that the suits / helmets were repainted several times for multiple scenes in the movie, In the cases where the Clavius suit was used as a discovery suit, then the air hose was connected.

There's a partially respected area of archaeology where people actually try to live in what we think was a house from the past, or try to travel and fight equipped like Roman soldiers. Much interesting detail is uncovered, but there's always that pesky 'what modern man imagines' about it, unfortunately. I recall an archaeologist showing a stone age item uncovered; a bone stick with a hole in one end, that showed signs of wear in the hole. A sceptre of authority if I recall correctly. A horseman from the Asian steppe recognised it immediately as a way of getting a grip on a rope without cutting your hands, and used to 'reel in' an annoyed horse.

Adams reference to the piano hinge on the backpack brought back a memory of multiple takes with one of the lids flipping open and (I thinkI remember) it being taped shut. This is after the astronauts started clutching their helmets. There was obviously no high pitch screeching on the set, so I really had no idea what was happening. Again, 55 year old memories, I don’t want to be older than I am now, but wish I’d been older then. I saw a few of the other sets, but that was the only filming I saw. My son found a pic in my father’s archive of my sister, our nanny and myself in front of an unpainted EVA pod with Keir Dullea in his Discovery jumpsuit. No autograph unfortunately.

The use of numbers that were easy to work with might be due to the use of slide rules back in the day to do calculations. You don't want to deal with a lot of digits to the right of the decimal point. Keeping things to halves and quarters of the marks on a rule would simplify calculations.

It was believed (from experience of making partial and full-pressure suits for pilots flying at high altitude), that a suit would become very stiff and hard to move in when pressurised at altitude. The suit would be made with corrugations or 'volutes', especially at the joints, so that it could bend while the air pressure stayed the same rather than being compressed, which the pilot would have to overcome with his strength. Very tiring. If you look up pics and vids of early spacesuits, especially before they have their outer protective fabric layer added, you'll see that the NASA space program made suits to fit each astronaut, and numerous others as well, at great expense. These also had wires, cables and a pulley system to enable movement without much resistance. More recently, suits are built up to fit the individual from a kit of parts that are hard items like parts of a suit of armour, with slip-rings at the joints, and an outer fabric layer. There is a photo of the shortest and tallest US astronauts in suits together, showing just ho flexible this design is.

I'm surprised any of these suits survived. Kubrik famously wanted everything from 2001 destroyed after filming specifically so it wouldn't show up in other productions. (It made things hell for the crew on 2010, since there weren't even many continuity shots and other reference materials for many items and makeups.)

A backpack from Dave or Frank's suit is visible as set dressing (on the roof of a tunnel) in a Doctor Who episode, or perhaps a Blake's Seven episode, I don't recall. The space suits seen in star wars Adam mentions may be the ones made for high-altitude flying bombers in the Royal Air Force, and later used in Doctor Who episodes (The Tenth Planet, The Wheel in Space), then in the cantina in first star wars, then as a certain bounty hunter's suit in Empire Strikes Back, then vanishes, as all the later one were made anew.

@Alan Canon Thanks I will look for that. Not sure if it was actually letraset but I remember using s product in the early 1980s that allowed you to make custom dry transfer designs. You made a negative of the design on lith film and then exposed the media to UV light through the negative. That cured the image and the surrounding non image parts were washed away with a solvent. When dry you could use it just like letraset.

Fran Blanche delivers an awesome and informative rant on the death of Letraset in her video on building a replica of the "Voiceprint Identification" control panel from Space Station V. Which is a gorgeous build, by the way: Fran uses materials that she is pretty sure the filmmakers would have had access to, and being Fran, she probably knows better than anybody. Great vid guys. Kubrick actually recorded his own breathing inside the helmet. Bit of trivia with the IBM panel on the sleeves: they were only meant for the Discovery suits, they are mostly absent on the Moon suits in the film except for one scene overlooking Clavius Base (a late post shoot pickup) where they needed an extra suit for the scene so a Discovery suit was resprayed silver and that's why the panel can be briefly seen on the astronaut to the left and afterward used in some publicity photos and on the existing suit at the museum exhibits.

the suit in the kubrick exhibit, A Clavius silver suit, is a knit back vinyl painted with Lacquer which is why its disintegrating slowly. My guess since the screen used suits were repainted so many times they were most likely made from the same vinyl. The 2001 silver suits I did for Adam were a 4 way stretch silver material Adam sent me to make the soft suits for him and Hadfield.

From a photograph of the TMA-1 excavation set being built, the floor was at ground level, with a pyramidal object at the centre, perhaps an early monolith as in the Sentinel story by Clarke? The surrounds were a raised area and two ramps 'down' into the pit, with duplicated set dressing that appears to have been intended to be shot from either end of the 'pit'. The place had apparently black curtains all around for the distant background and space to fit into.

What I'd like to know, just off the bat: did you have to walk up a big ramp to get to the lunar "surface"? In other words, did they "build up" the TMA-1 excavation site, with the monolith more or less resting on the soundstage floor? I was minus 1 years old when the film debuted, first saw it aged 8 or 9, and I envy you that experience!

@Thomas Becker it's not a big deal. I'm just pointing out that when I worked for one of the defense contractors, it was simply considered bad form to parade around the fact. That's simply he might have been doing.

    • Thomas Becker

      Thomas Becker

      پیش 18 روز

@quetsch I worked on plenty of stuff that required a clearance. No one cares if you work at a specific company. There's some jobs that have an NDA that says you can't say what you're working on specifically, sure, but not a blanket "you can't say you work here" clause. Maybe he's working under the table, but I think you're reading far too into him not specifying his current employment, if he is indeed currently employed.

    • quetsch

      quetsch

      پیش 18 روز

@Thomas Becker resumes are sent from one small group of people to another. The issue here is pronouncing your employment to the world on a IRface channel. Maybe you didn't work on cleared stuff, but not parading around your defense work is literally rule #1 of getting clearance.

Much what 2001: A Space Odyssey means, is not in the visuals, as was normal for films made back then. Things like the interference of aliens (the Firstborn) making us into creatures that survived by killing, rather than peaceful and extinct leaf-eaters. That our machines are more pure and so must kill us, or that the aliens are merely sowing and reaping. It's remarkably like the film 'Quatermass and the Pit' (or 'Five Million Years to Earth'), in that respect. Or the monolith being both a 'Swiss army knife machine' and a burglar alarm, to warn the Firstborn that we're loose.

I'm trying to clock when I saw it, and I think it must have been the same year, same age (I was born during the final days of 1968, right after Apollo 8). I'm aware that there was a re-release off the back of the success of Star Wars and Close Encounters. I wish I could find a theatrical engagement schedule for the period from my town....I guess old newspapers at the library would be the way to go.
